Putting is the quickest way you can lower your golf scores. Really, think about it. If you are three putting 4 to 5 times a round, you are losing 5 strokes around. What if you keep on missing 3 foot putts, imagine what if you would make all of the three to four foot putts.
Now you are starting to see how you can quickly shave strokes off of your game by getting better at putting.
But exactly how do you go about getting better at putting? The best way is to take a in depth look at your putting game and see where you struggle. The two most common struggles are:
So I am going to give drills to get better at these two parts of your putting game.
Drill For Short Putts
This is one of my favorite drills for short putts. You need the following:
You want to set the tees on the right side, left side, in front of, and behind the hole. You want to put three tees on each side at the following distances: 3 feet, 4 feet, 6 feet.
Here is what you do. you can start any side you want to, but you are going to make a putt from the three foot tee, then the 4 foot tee, and then the 6 foot tee. Then you go on to the next side, all the way until you complete the circle.
But here is the catch if you miss a putt at any point, you have to start over. So if you are on the first side and you make the first three foot putt, but then miss the 4 foot putt, start over.
If you are on the last side, on the very last six foot putt, and you miss it, start over. I really love this drill because it simulates the pressure we put on ourselves on the course.
Drill For Distance Control
Distance control is one of the biggest problems, and with this simple drill you can master it. You will need the following
You want to set the extra club a putters length behind the hole. Then you want to set the tees at 10 feet, 15 feet, and 20 feet.
The goal here is to putt each ball from each tee and get the ball past the hole, but have it stop short of the extra club.
If you hit the extra club or leave it short of the hole you have to start over.
If you do these two drills you will consistently hit the ball closer to the hole, and you will be much better at shorts putts which will basically eliminate three putting and you will be a better putter.
