Fix My Golf Swing - Perfect Putting Grip

Putting is so important to the overall golf game. In a regulation round of golf on a par 72 golf course, at 2 putts for each green -- a player will make a total of 36 putts. That's half of all the golf strokes in a regulation round of golf. Putting should be given much more attention by the weekend golfer.

Basic elements of putting

The basic elements in putting are the putter, the putting grip, stance, forward press (if any), the putting stroke and accurately reading the putt. This article is focuses on the grip.

Let's start with fundamentals. You hit your approach shot on the green. You accurately read the length of the putt you are facing along with the amount of the break. You have a fix on the target line for your putt. Now it is time to grip the putter and get into your putting stance.

Think of the putter blade as an extension of your arms. A mental picture of making that putt is in your head. Now you must transfer that mental picture into energy that flows down through your arms to your putter blade as you make the backswing, ball strike and follow-through.

Your hands merely connect your arms to the putter shaft. It is your arms that move the putter through the golf ball. Your wrists hinge very little if at all. So your hands must act as a unit.

My favorite putting grip

My favorite grip is the is the extended forefinger overlapping golf grip.Flex your knees slightly and let your hands hang down vertically. Grasp the putter grip with the left hand, with the shaft along the hinge between your fingers and the pad of your left hand. Now clasp your right hand on the club with the little finger of the right hand overlapping the right hand between the index and middle fingers.

Now place the right forefinger on top the these three fingers of your left hand -- forefinger, index and ring fingers. The left thumb should be covered by the lifeline of the right hand and both thumbs should be pointing down the shaft. The palms of your hands should by facing one other.

This grip allows both hands to act together as a unit.

Which putting grip is best for you?

Watch the pros as they putt for big money in golf tournaments. They use a variety of different putters, putting styes and putting grips. Different putting coaches tend to prefer a variety of different putting grips.

I suggest that you try the extended forefinger overlapping putting golf grip. But you need to find a grip that is most comfortable for you -- and importantly, one that gives you the confidence that you will be sinking more putts.

Even professional golfers rely on swing coaches to help them perfect their swing. You can too. There is an excellent team of golf instructors online with complete resources ready to to help you fix your golf swing. Try them. Improve your swing and become a better golfer.
