Rudimentary Golf Etiquette

Just like any other sport, the game of golf has rules but unlike most other sports, there is no referee or umpire to make sure the rules of the game are followed. This is why players have to rely on the use of basic golf etiquette and an honest attitude being displayed by those taking part. There are, of course, no rules of etiquette written in stone but common courtesy, great sportsmanship and consideration towards others should be shown by all golf players regardless of their level of play. Accidents should be prevented at all times. If, for example, there is a chance you will hit someone when you take your shot, you should wait until you are sure the coast is clear. Similarly, throwing your club or another piece of equipment around, however excited or frustrated you may be is simply not following the rules of golfing etiquette.

Play Fair: Due to the fact that the handicap system is a fair way to play, it is a breach of golf etiquette to play without an accurate handicap.

Know the Rules: It's important that you know the rules of the game and in order to familiarize yourself with any local rules, all you have to do is ask. This is particularly the case if you are new to the game of golf or using a new venue.

On the Tee: When you are on the tee you should keep silent whilst other players are lining up a putt or hitting the ball. If your golf ball is nearest to the hole, beginner's etiquette dictates that you should remove the flag in preparation for further play.

Order of Play: Once every player has hit their drives, the correct order of play for tournament golf is for the golfer who is the most distance away from the hole to take the first turn. However, sometimes when four people are playing a friendly round of golf they speed things up a little by agreeing to play ready golf instead. This basically means that as long as it is safe to proceed, the golfers will take their next shot whatever their position on the course.

Part of the beginner etiquette involves planning your shot prior to reaching your ball. Let the group following you play through if you happen to lose your place on the course and after you pick your ball up volunteer your score for the hole. However, if play is congested use basic golf etiquette and abandon your ball if necessary. In the case of a suspected lost ball, you can save some time by taking a shot at a provisional ball.

Preserve the Golf Course: On the tee it's important to fix any ball marks and to replace or repair your divots. Take care with a little extra etiquette: Show your true colors with a little extra etiquette. For example, when your game of golf is over, thank your opponent for both the game and his or her company.
