How To Drive The Ball Farther
When you can hit the ball for distance and accuracy, you can expect your scores to lower. To hit that drive that you dream about, alot of things have to come together at impact.
Accuracy is just as crucial as hitting for distance. There is not a golfer out there, who does not want to hit the ball for both distance and accuracy. You can do this with practice.
When we say hit the ball straight, we are not talking about a absolutely straight drive. Some players swings, naturally promote a fade or draw. So, when we say straight, we mean pretty close to where you wanted the ball to go.
Also, when we say far, this could mean different things to different people. Many golfers will hit the ball under 200 yards and they are fine with that. While others will hit the ball 300 yards. So let's take a look at how we can get your drives long and straight.
First, lets's start with your set-up:
One of the most important aspects of your swing, is your set-up. You must align yourself to your target. You need to bend forward at the waist and have your knees bent a little. Place the ball roughly 3 ball widths left of center (for right hand golfers). Take your proper grip. Your arms should hang directly below your shoulders.
Now, let's take a look at swing speed:
There are too many golfers, who simply try to swing to fast. Slow your tempo down, on your backswing. At the top of your backswing, hesitate for a couple of seconds. This will let you to start your downswing with your hips leading the way. An increase in clubhead speed, will add distance to your drives. This is accomplished by using your whole body when you swing. Your arms, legs, shoulders and hips must all work together and meet at the point of contact.
The next topic is balance:
If you want to hit longer straighter drives you must remain balanced. Staying balanced is important and it all begins with your set-up and swing speed. Trying to swing too fast, will not only make you lose your balance, but, your distance and accuracy will also suffer.
You need to make sure that you can hit the ball somewhat straight, before trying to gain distance.
Being able to hit for distance is not always a good thing if you are not accurate.
