CB 712 Irons and MB 712 Irons review
The Titleist 712 CB irons are crafted for serious golfers and feature a slightly wider sole than the 712 MBs helping players that are more aggressive through the turf at impact. The 712 CBs are described as "a reinterpretation, not a complete reinvention" of the previous 710 CBs irons by Steve Pelisek, General Manager of Titleist.
A new satin-chrome finish reduces glare and accentuates the toe and top-line profile for easier alignment. The shallow cavity, muscle design on the Titleist 712 CB irons has been optimized behind the impact area to improve feel and a rounder profile, and soft top-line provide a classic but improved contemporary look. The improved weighting also produces consistent launch angles, backspin and ball speed in order to provide precise distance and shot control demanded by better players. The Titleist 712 CB irons also provide increased inertia, forgiveness and a slightly higher ball flight compared with the 712 MBs.
The Titleist CB 712 irons replace the 710 model of the same name and given that it is were so successful, there are not any major changes. The biggest visual change is the chrome satin finish which we think looks great. The sole is a little wider and the trailing edge on the back of the head has a little camber on it, both of which make it a little more playable.
Compared to the Titleist MB irons the CB irons have a larger head, top line and a little more offset to give you a bit more forgiveness and a slightly higher flight, although it is still pretty good in the big scheme of things. However don't think these are game improvement clubs as they are not. The Titleist CB 712 irons are still very much for single figure handicappers who like a more traditional looking forged iron but want a little more margin for error. You get great feel and feedback and shaping shots is very easy right through the set.
The Titleist CB iron is the most popular Titleist model on the European Tour and we are not surprised, with a lot of players blending the CB's in the some MB short irons or Titleist AP2 long irons. The Titleist CB 712 irons is a very competent iron and for most single figure amateurs we would recommend blending in with some of the other Titleist models for a combination of forgiveness and feel.
The Titleist MB 712 irons build upon the successful, tour-proven design of the 710 MB irons with improved looks, feel and performance. The first noticeable difference is the Tour-preferred satin finish that accentuates the toe and top-line profile for improved alignment, and also reduces glare at address. The MB 712 irons feature a new, narrow, cambered sole design that sees more trailing edge and heel relief for reduced turf resistance that will suit players with a shallow angle of attack who tend to pick the ball off the turf rather than a more aggressive, steeper angle.
The Titleist MB 712 irons maintain the classic look, lines, profile, sound and feel of the classic Titleist forged irons, but add modern playability. A thin, but soft top-line and rounder profile create a traditional but contemporary look, whilst a minimal progressive offset improves the set-up appearance and improves control. Known as the "dog bone", the faceted surface on the back of the 712 MB club heads is larger in the heel and toe, adding more mass behind the impact area for the traditional feel expected from a blade iron.
The Titleist MB 712 irons replace the 710 version and according to Titleist the MB iron is their most popular model on the PGA Tour. To be honest we are not surprised as not only is it a good iron, but also because you need to be highly skilled player to get the most from them. This is a very traditional blade and performs very well provided you hit it out of the middle and this is where things get a little sticky as the sweet spot is quite small and the forgiveness is pretty minimal, so at least you get great feedback on how well or otherwise you have hit it.
Compared to the previous version the Titleist MB 712 irons have a nicer satin finish that looks a little more contemporary than the previous polished chrome look. The tweaks to the sole design and the heel and trailing edge relieves do make this a lovely iron to hit, especially from tight lies. It also enables a little more mass to go into the muscle back behind the face for a more solid feel.
