Golf communities: Fan clubs and support system
Golf as a sport has been in existence for well over 500 years. Even though its origins are unknown, first organized form of golf was seen in Scotland in early 1600's, and was played as hobby sport leading it ban to promote archery. It was not until 1750s that golf was played again. With re-emergence of golf many young men, the Old course at St. Andrews became a center of activity. Also, the golf course in the world is Musselburgh Links, Scotland, where golf is being played since 1672.
With the oldest written rules compiled in 1744 for The Honorable Company of Edinburgh Golfers, the first example of a golfing community. The likes of Old Tom Morris have displayed their talent and designed the course as well. His son, Tom Morris Jr. was also a golfer of repute. In the years to come golf gained popularity among the intellectuals and the educated class. By the end of the 20th century, golf has been established as a mainstream sport with contribution of players such as Alan Robertson, Jack Nicklaus who played in early 1900's and 1960's respectively and Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy, who have taken the game to a new height. However, just like any other sport, fan clubs and golf communities have a very strong contribution. Golf too has a steady and growing fan following, these following lead to formation of communities often congregating at Golf clubs and tournament venues. Golf community also act as a credible source of information for those willing to take up golf as a sport. They have served as launching pad for many professional golfers and caddies.
The structure of golf has evolved over a period of 500 years, and is now based on the original 13 rules of golf. This has led to creation of Professional Golfers Association in the US that is responsible for professional players and organizing tournaments and competitions. Each continents has a dedicated tour managed by the golfing association of the member country in which the tournament is being held.
