Valderrama: maybe the best golf course in Spain?
Despite the fact that golf was invented in Scotland (whose geography may be, many times, a gigantic golf course), it has made its fortune in many other countries. And without any doubt, one of the countries in which this tradition is most prevalent is in Spain.
Golf in Spain
In Spain there are many, many golf courses. And among them there are some of the most prestigious ones in Europe. This is the case of the Valderrama, considered by many professional players as the best golf course in Spain .
Valderrama is a circuit that dates back to 1974, when it had the name of Las Aves.
There played sir Henry Cotton, or Severiano Ballesteros: it is a 18-hole golf course, designed by the renowned golf course architect Robert Trent Jones .
It has been home of the Volvo Masters from 1988 to 1996, and later from 2002 to 2008. Also of the AMEX World Championships between 1999 and 2000 (with large participation, such as Tiger Woods), and the Andalusia Masters of 2010-2011.
Even the Ryder Cup 1997 was held at the Valderrama.
A field of great prestige, in which all the amateurs and golf professionals enjoy this sport at the highest level, in an incomparable setting.
The environment of the Valderrama
It is frequently argued against golf (especially in countries where the water is not an extra too, like in the case of Spain) that it has a negative environmental impact.
However, in many fields it is precisely its existence which improves the ecology of the place. This is the case of the Valderrama, which has received certificates and awards for its care and contribution to the environment.
The reason is that the environment of this circuit of golf is staggering. Located in the midst of nature, with a paragon of trees, shrubs, streams, ponds, lakes, hills and vantage points, it is a sanctuary for many species of insects, birds, aquatic reptiles, amphibians, and even mammals such as badgers. Strolling about it, therefore, implies an experience that goes far beyond golf.
To finish off the play, the Valderrama circuit has a spectacular club house.
Traditional cuisine in the best environment, shop, and locker rooms of luxury for the golfers, put the finishing touch on a field that cannot be missed in your list if you love golf.
It is, obviously, a private club for members only, although it allows the entry to visitors: a visit certainly recommended.
If you love golf, and you are craving for playing in a high-level circuit under the friendly atmosphere of the Iberian peninsula, then you already have a name to go: Valderrama.
