Traditionally, eye conditions are corrected by wearing eyeglasses. One exception to this situation is for people who play sports, especially contact sports where a lot of running or physical contact is involved. Wearing eyeglasses is impossible because this can fall of the person’s face and eventually break. An alternative to this would then be to wear contact lenses.
Contact lenses have a sturdier hold to the surface of the eyes which means that vision will remain clear even with the hardest tackles from other players. For a more permanent solution, laser eye treatment should be an option for athletes. After undergoing this type of eye surgery, eyeglasses and contact lenses will be a thing of the past.
The sport that recognizes the value of laser eye treatment the most is, ironically, golf. This non-contact sport allows its players to wear eyeglasses and contact lenses since no physical contact is required and it does not necessarily require fast movements as this is actually a slow-paced sport.
The main reason why golfers appreciate laser eye treatment is because of the “swim” of sight which is often present on the peripheral vision of players’ eyeglasses. Because golf requires accuracy and precision, the slightest distraction in one’s sight will result to a slightly out swing and eventually cause a mishit on the golf ball because of the poor trajectory. This also means that contact lenses would be a more viable option for golf players.
There are certain problems when wearing contact lenses though. Golf is a game that is played during the day, on most parts. Contact lenses are only effective during the first few hours it is worn as it gets increasingly dry throughout the day. When playing golf at night, contact lenses would then be dry already, causing the player to be distracted as the sight gets degraded and making the perfect swing becomes impossible.
Tiger Woods is the prime example of a golfer who found success with the treatment for his chosen sport. Undergoing his first laser eye treatment in 1999, Tiger Woods was actually short-sighted when he started as a professional golfer. Soon after his first surgery, he went on to win the Disney Classic Tournament and other PGA tours. It became obvious that his first treatment was a success, as seen in the number of competitions he won afterwards.
In 2007, however, Tiger needed a second surgery when he noticed that his vision started changing. After experiencing headaches and fuzzy vision, Tiger underwent his second laser eye treatment and went on to win more golf tournaments which he competed in.
For golfers, Tiger’s success stories encouraged them to consider laser eye treatment as a viable option. Those who underwent the surgery reported on experiencing clearer vision which brought laser eye treatment to new heights. The consequence, then, has proven to be more than satisfactory for a sport that requires razor sharp eyesight.
Talking to your local optometrist or ophthalmologist is a recommended to find out more about laser ye treatment.
