Originally named San Marco Island by Spanish explorers, Marco is graced with two golf courses (plus others on the mainland but nearby), miles of white-sand beaches and beautiful year-round weather. Recreational activities beyond golf include boating, sport fishing, and tennis, and shopping. Other attractions include , sumptuous restaurants, fine shopping, fine dining, and lively entertainment. There is plenty of luxurious real estate on Marco, helped by the dredging and sculpting of interior water channels that has given San Marco's available property excessive amounts of waterfront compared to the amount of available land. All this wonder is set amid the stunning subtropical beauty that is unique to Southwest Florida's Gulf coast.
Marco Island enjoys a tropical climate, specifically a tropical wet and dry or savanna type. The area is known for distinct wet and dry seasons, with most of the rainfall falling between the months of June and October. Like anywhere in Florida and the Gulf of Mexico, Hurricanes can be a problem.
Marco is south of Naples, which can be reached via I-75 Alligator Alley/Everglades Parkway. Alternatively, US 41 is a more southern option through the uninhabited interior of south Florida.
The closest airport is Marco Island Executive Airport, just on the mainland despite it's name. For scheduled air service, Southwest Florida International Airport near Fort Myers is the closest at 1 1/4 hours or 47 miles away.
There are two golf course right on the island and a third on the approch highway to Marco Island:
A private club, social memberships with reciprocal privileges are available to qualified applicants. Hideaway Beach Club is part of a private gated community situated directly on the Gulf of Mexico. The more than 300 acres of property, half of which are wetlands and conservancy, make Hideaway home to the world's largest concentration of native Florida Live Oak trees. Condominiums, beach villas, single family homes, and vacant buildable lots frame the other 150 acres of property.
With boardwalks for nature studies at natural lagoons, shelling, fishing, Sports Center complex, and a Gulf front Beach Club that hosts an array of entertainment and exquisite dinners to satisfy any appetite, Hideaway Beach Club is an excellent place to call home. The course itself is a 9-hole executive golf course.

The Island Country Club says they are proud to offer a premium golf experience where friendly knowledgeable staff makes each day memorable.
The Island Country Club offers an 18-hole course with a championship layout as it's centerpiece. From the first tee shot to your last, golfers enjoy the beautifully sculpted and very generous fairways leading to spacious greens surrounded by “Florida White” bunkers. There are resident bald eagles soaring overhead, acres of lush tropical flowers, and plenty of foliage along the course.
Dave Wallace, a highly respected golf course architect, designed the original course at Island Country Club in 1966. In 1986 the course was taken private and in 1991 all 18 greens as well as the practice green and chipping green, were rebuilt by the “Squire” himself, Gene Sarazen. They maintained their U.S.G.A. specifications however. Certified Georgia Tifeagle grass is used on all the putting surfaces and a completely new irrigation system was installed to maintain optimal course playing conditions. Today, the club works with designer Gordon Lewis to keep the golf course up to date.
