Say the words "golf tournament" and what usually comes to mind are the Nissan Open, the PGA, the LPGA, Myrtle Beach, Pebble Beach, Kapalua, the Pro-Am, the Masters, Australian Skins, and other celebrity occasions on the list. Car manufacturers, consumer electronics companies, mortgage lenders, telephone and oil giants, commercial banks, and more usually sponsor these celebrity events. Add to these the tournaments held in the Phoenix and Tucson areas and the mind boggles. Yet there are hundreds more major golf tournaments held every year throughout the country, certainly throughout the world.
Some less well-known tournaments are scheduled in small towns for smaller purses, while others in larger communities serve to raise money for local charities. For the love of kids and the game, grown-ups run junior golf clubs and tournaments for able-bodied or disadvantaged kids, as well as tournaments for handicapped children. At the other end of the scale, self-proclaimed weekend duffers get to participate in their own tournaments, too.
Perhaps the biggest surprise is that so many golf clubs, including Arizona's, host corporate golf outings, where the mail clerks can play alongside the company brass and everyone else. The resort's Head Professional and the staff will put together shotgun starts for 72 to 144 players, with a number of other options considered. These may extend to gifts or prizes, raffles or auctions, entertainment and an evening banquet.
Even with the many professional and semi-pro tournaments hosted by the LPGA, USGA or AGA, Arizona has room for many fundraising events. The western states are known for their hospitality and "good neighbor" attitudes. In 2005, charity events listings included the DeafNation Phoenix Charity Golf Tournament, Arizona Great American Clean Up Golf Tournament, 2nd Annual Phoenix Rescue Mission Golf Classic, and Habitat for Humanity Desert Foothills Golf Event.
