In my mind, TaylorMade R1 Black Driver is a great improvement over my previous titleist 913 d2 driver. The head literally looks like a shoebox with a stick on the end of it. It has a huuuuuge club face. The design is awesome, and the club just looks great.
To clear up any confusion or questions that might come up, the answer is yes. This is the same driver as the current R1, just in a different color for those that have a preference. It is not a replacement for the R1 as the driver will still be available in both colors. The driver has 16 worldwide wins this year and features the greatest range of adjustability of any driver in TaylorMade's history.
The TaylorMade R1 Black Driver is the one driver model that can be tuned to fit Tour pros and amateurs alike. Shot-shaping movable weights promote a neutral/straight flight or a distance-enhancing draw, and improved aerodynamics reduce drag over the head to promote faster clubhead speed. The thick-thin crown provides a lower and more-forward center of gravity location, thus promoting a higher launch, faster ball speed, and lower spin. Inverted Cone technology milled into the inner side of the clubface expands the portion of the face that delivers high ball speed.
The company introduced today a limited edition version of its R1 driver in a glossy, all-black finish that features a muted crown graphic similar to the original R1. The new look comes to a driver that features most of the same technology found in the original white R1. Most notably, the driver is the most adjustable in TaylorMade history, including 168 possible settings just like the original R1. The clubhead features two movable heel and toe weights to manipulate center of gravity locations, a four-degree range of lofts courtesy a 12-way adjustable hosel (from 8 to 12 degrees) and a sole plate that accommodates seven different face angle adjustments.
All in all,the R1 Black is a really good choice. Not only does it out perform my old driver by 10 to 15 yards it looks great. I never could get used to the White head. This driver is as good as any of the TaylorMade cheap golf clubs with the plus of allowing for three different adjustments. I especially like the way I can change the loft on the driver depending on the playing conditions or the course I will be playing that day.
