Putting Additional Muscle to One's Golf Drives

There are probably few golfers among us that would not love to find an additional 20 yards on our drives. After which if we get those 20 yards we would seek another ten. The exception to this rule is my lovely wife, who is happy with hitting each drive 150 yards in the center of the fairway, regardless of whether she hasn't played in 6 months. I tell her it must be unexciting doing that all the time; however the truth is we'd all like to be hitting our next shot from the fairway on every hole.

Any time most recreational golfers would like to a little more yardage they merely attempt to generate greater club head speed. This is the correct idea however they attempt to do it incorrectly; just by swinging more rapidly. This typically results in even less distance from the tee and more mishit balls. There are some things we can do that can assist most amateur golfers create additional club head pace if you are not doing them before now.

1. Recognize your power slot within the back swing. That slot where golfers bring the golf club back in the back swing needs to be behind the shoulders for most people. Some people will move the golf club in the air too high, although the more common fault would be to bring the hands too low and behind the back during the back swing. This really is a baseball swing mentality, however to strike the golf ball using the optimum power the back swing slot should be at approximately shoulder level at the top of the back swing.

2. Keep your head behind the golf ball at impact. When many amateur players make an effort to get a little more power as part of their golf swing, many of them have the habit to almost "jump" into the ball. Keeping the feet grounded not just enables for more power out of your legs, but keeping the head back enables you to stay in the maximum power position at shot contact.

This is especially true with the golf driver versus golf shots being hit with no golf tee. A ball which is played when teed off the ground will give you the ability to travel to your ball using a more sweeping move rather than the descending arc required to get the shot airborne from the ground. Also from the tee you keep your golf ball a little more forward in your stance as opposed to the ball location for an iron shot. This will allow you to be able to stay in this power position behind the ball when it is struck.

These are only a couple of methods to actually add length to your drives. A well-coordinated golf swing utilizing the power from your core will be the way to increase distance, not simply just swinging harder at the shot.
