Golf is a lot of fun to learn and play and offers many benefits that we can all appreciate. It is most enjoyable when you are shooting lower scores and getting better. Most amateurs do not really understand what it takes to get better at this game and think that hitting the driver perfectly all the time is the key which is a misunderstanding. The reality is that the driver is one of the most difficult clubs in the bag to hit straight all the time so do not spend all your time on this club.
Analyze your score:
In fact if you were to break down your score on each round you will notice that at least 60 percent of your shots come from inside of 150 yards so it makes sense that you should spend at least half your practice time on shots under 150 yards if you want to get better. Focus on hitting wedge shots, putting and chipping as this can really lower your scores quickly and almost anyone has the talent to be very good at these areas whereas not everyone has the physical ability to blast 300 yard plus drives nor is it necessary in order to shoot low scores. As a matter of fact many players have shot very good rounds even without using the driver at all since keeping the ball in play and having a great short game are much more important when it comes to scoring.
Putting is a key part of golf and is almost like a separate game in and of itself. The great thing about putting is that almost anyone has the talent to be a great putter, it is just a matter of learning strategies that can work well for you. One to keep in mind when putting is that you always want to putt to make it instead of aiming to get it close or in some 3 foot circle. There are many putting styles and techniques you can choose from so decide on a technique that you like and stay with that long term making minor adjustments along the way.
If you want to avoid the putting yips or cure it then you need to learn to trust a particular style and focus only on fine tuning it. Also avoid changing putters just because you had a few bad performances instead stick with a particular putter you like because it takes time to adjust to any new putter or putting style and that is not the key to great putting anyway as being decisive and learning to trust your stroke is much more important than what stroke you are using. Remember that even on the pro tours there are many putter who use very unconventional styles that allow them to still putt very well because they are used to that approach and getting it to work for them. There is most definitely more than one putting style that can work and this also applies to the full swing as there is more than one way to swing the club that can produce good results.
