The latest irons from TaylorMade are the R9 and R9 TP sets. Both of these models have a classic club head look to them unlike the Burner models that are of a more modern shape.
The R9 TP irons are aimed at more professional players giving them extra workability and feedback. Other players with a mid or higher handicap will probably go more for the R9 set.
Both of these sets according to TaylorMade are made to provide help with attaining greater distances.
When considering the set of irons, the long and middle irons are focused on distance with the short irons being designed primarily for control and greater accuracy. Irons No.3,4,5 and 6 have a VCC [Velocity Control Chamber], this is actually an enclosed space right behind the ultra-thin clubface which means that more of the face is unsupported and this gives a lot more flex and rebound when impacting.
The TaylorMade R9 TP do have a generally more classic look but they incorporate extra tour-preferred shaping, i.e. the head is more compact in shape, it has a semi-straight leading edge and a semi-square toe. Thinner topline and a thinner sole which is cambered and beveled. The VCC can be found in 2,3,4 and 5 irons in the R9 TP set.
As standard the R9 irons have KBS 90-gram steel shafts with either stiff or regular flexes, the R9 TP has KBS Tour Series steel shafts and the R9 model also comes with Fijikura Motore graphite shafts.
The TaylorMade R9 irons with steel shafts are less expensive than with graphite. Sand wedges and A-wedges are also available, separately if required.
The R9TP irons come with steel shafts only and with this set a 2-iron and A-wedge are available separately.
