When you look at the majority of professional players today it's pretty clear that they are taking the time and effort to ensure that they are incredibly fit for golf, if they don't it is unlikely that they are going to be able to compete with the others out there on the tour that do. So as an amateur player you can learn a lot from those players that work at their golf fitness, they can play for longer and have reduced problems with injury... so why aren't you fit for golf?
Let's face it, you've probably injured yourself in some way while playing a round of golf; your shoulders or lower back maybe? The large number of possible ways in which you can do yourself harm as a golfer should be enough to convince most people that paying attention to their ‘fit for golf' status is very important.
After all, golf is a very physical game that can place an incredible amount of strain on a number of key areas of your body. All of the muscles, ligaments and various joints that are involved in swinging a golf club at up to 100mph are going to pay a wicked price if you don't take the time to condition them against these strains.
Just think about what it is that you do within a golf swing for a second; you are attempting to swing a 3-4 foot long golf club at nearly 100mph to hit a small ball as long and as accurately as you can. In order to do so you need to hold a stable body position that allows you to generate power while achieving great levels of fluidity; if you're not in the best shape physically you are never going to master this in such a way as to be comfortable.
Even the arguably ‘low impact' aspects of golf put you in unnatural positions that can be a problem in the long term, take putting for instance; how often have you spent 5-10 minutes practising only to find that afterwards you've got yourself an aching lower back? The top culprits here are going to be a stiff lower back and possibly fragile hamstrings, but if you've spent the time to become ‘fit for golf' you won't suffer from these issues.
Utilising a high quality golf exercise program in order to get fit for golf is an excellent way to increase your enjoyment each and every time you are out on the course, as well as ensure that you are in as good a shape at the end of the round as you were at the start.
