Highs – and some lows – of Ryder Cup history
The biggest Ryder Cup comeback was in 1999, when the US made up a four-point deficit to eventually win 14½ to 13½.
Newport's bus station has been given a thorough face-lift ahead of the event, being repainted, cleaned and kitted out with better lighting, new bins and benches.
A number of additional signs and directions will be installed across Newport to help direct the tens of thousands of visitors.
Sixty brightly coloured "Super Dragons" will appear around Newport as part of the event. The 5x6ft sculptures will be done by artists including one inspired by Elvis and another by Newport rappers Goldie Lookin' Chain.
It is estimated that the Ryder Cup has created around 1,600 jobs in Newport.
Three Welshman have captained Europe, with Ian Woosnam following in the footsteps of Dai Rees and Brian Huggett.
Europe will be defending an unbeaten record on home territory stretching back to Spain in 1997.
The match format of The Ryder Cup has changed many times, but since 1979 it has comprised of four fourball and four foursomes during days one and two, with 12 singles matches on the final, third day.
Alhough not involved in team Europe, Ian Woosnam is the official ambassador for Team Wales in the run-up to the 2010 Ryder Cup.
The 2008 Ryder Cup, in Louisville, Kentucky, is estimated to have benefited the area to the tune of $1bn.
The television audience for the Ryder Cup is expected to top one billion people.
US Open champ Graeme McDowell: I'm off to celebrate with a Guinness
Graeme McDowell has joined the golfing greats by winning the US Open at Pebble Beach.
McDowell is the first European since Tony Jacklin in 1970 to win the season's second Major.
And the 30-year-old, who has sealed a place in the Ryder Cup team, is the UK's first Major winner since Paul Lawrie in 1999.
After his victory the Ulsterman said: "A few pints of Guinness will probably go down around now."
And the festivities will continue back at his golf club at Rathmore, in County Antrim, where his supporters stayed up until the early hours of Monday morning.
"I might catch up with them all for a beer next weekend," he smiled.
McDowell's final round 74 was the highest score since Andy North won with the same total in 1985.
But on a fraught final day on the Californian coast, the new world No.13 held his nerve to beat France's Gregory Havret by one shot and leave Ernie Els, Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods trailing in his wake.
"It's a pretty surreal feeling," said McDowell, Northern Ireland's first Major champion since Fred Daly at the 1947 Open.
"To win at Pebble Beach, to join the names, Jack Nicklaus, Tom Watson, Tom Kite, Tiger Woods, me - wow! I'm not quite sure if I belong in that list, but I'm there now. It's a pretty amazing feeling.
Ian Woosnam rules out Welsh Ryder Cup role
Welsh golf legend Ian Woosnam has ruled out being part of Europe captain Colin Montgomerie's backroom team for the first Ryder Cup in Wales.
Montgomerie admits he would "love" a Welshman to inspire Europe to regain the trophy - but winning 2006 captain Woosnam insists it will not be him.
Former world number one Woosnam had expressed an interest in the 2010 job.
But he said: "I made it pretty clear if I wasn't going to be captain then I'd let the other guys get on with it."
Woosnam was assistant to skipper Sam Torrance when Europe beat the United States in the 2002 Ryder Cup at the Belfry - and Woosnam's fellow countryman Phillip Price was a integral part of that historic win.
