Clearly, there is a number of ways to improve your golf game, however putting accounts for a very high percentage of your strokes on the course. Most golfers have heard the saying 'Drive for show, Putt for dough' and honestly this saying couldn't be any more accurate. How to improve your putting stroke? Well this is a question many people search for the answer to. I hope below tips help give some useful tips to greatly improve your stroke next time you hit the course.
The Grip - There are such a variety of grips ranging from overlap, interlock, the claw to the baseball style grip. It is worth experimenting across the board to determine what grip you find most comfortable. As long as you are sticking with certain fundamentals (e.g. minimal wrist break, square putter face, etc) it will only help improve your stroke. Grips such as 'the claw' may appear somewhat extreme, however if this helps improve your consistency on the putting green, why not try it?
Posture - Golfers are made up of different shapes & sizes but you can adopt certain standard principles for your posture on the greens. When it comes to posture you need make sure your knees are flexed, tilt naturally from your spine and let your arms hang naturally / tension free. Also, with regards to the balancing on your feet it should be fairly neutral and possibly slight towards the balls of your feet. These principles will give you every chance of making a consistent stroke.
The Forward Press - Phil Mickelson is a prime example of how a forward press can help improve your putting stroke. The basis of slightly pushing forward your hands forward before taking the putter head back decreases the amount of loft on the putter face for a more consistent strike. If you haven't tried this before it's worth trying out. It also creates a nice rhythm to your stroke as you are immediately progressing into the putter takeaway.
In conclusion, I think that if you are looking looking at ways of how to improve your putting stroke, it makes sense to look at address the fundamentals to begin with and use that as the basis to improve your consistency on the greens. By focusing in on your grip and posture especially, you can see some immediate improvements in the quality of your stroke. If you are looking to further improve your putting overall game, I recently reviewed a great book, which you can view here. This has done wonders for my putting and really provides excellent instruction.
