Golf is a very complex and interesting sport. To be a decent player you need to gather some skills like concentration, practice, discipline, a great ability to manage frustration and, above all, an impeccable technique.
For people who haven’t had the opportunity to be out there in a field, it may seem like an uninteresting activity. But I am sure that those who have seen a ball flying after a perfect drive and landing gently in the fairway, understand the feelings of peace and joy that are an important part of this game.
Of course, these shots can only be achieved by people who have played for a long time and practice lots of hours every week. That is why, for the rest of us who are not professional and don’t have a lot of time to practice, golf seems so hard. So, what does it take to be good (or at least decent) and to have an enjoyable time when you decide to pack your clubs and head towards the field? Here we give you some insights to help you improve your technique.
The grip
If you have had any golfing lessons in the past this is one of the first things you were taught. You have to make sure that your stronger hand is able to hold the club practically alone because it will be used to give direction to the club. Your fingers cover the handle and the thumb is aligned with the tip of the club. The weak hand is used for support only wrapped around the other one.
The stance
1. Your legs: They have to be aligned with your shoulders, your feet have to be facing forward and your knees must be bent comfortably.
2. Your back: You have to lean forward approximately 30º making sure you don´t hunch.
3. Your arms: They have to rest comfortably in front of you holding the club without bending your wrists.
The movement
This is one of the most difficult abilities to master but on of the most important. Your lower body has to be well positioned and your upper body will rotate back and forth in a harmonic way. The movement can be divided in two parts:
Back swing: The rotation starts with the shoulders and your arms follow the movement until the club points to the sky.
Down swing: Your hip moves to the front making your shoulders and arms come back down in a fast sudden move.
There are several details you will need to work on like the wrist position and the club trajectory because a good swing involves many fine points. You also have to consider that the shot varies a bit depending on the kind of club you use, the distance you want to cover with your shot as well as the surface your ball is in (fairway, rough, bunker, green).
What you need to have in mind is that this sport requires a lot of practice, patience and a great tolerance to frustration. It is possible that you will hit the ball in an unwanted direction many times before you start sending it where you desire. The important thing is never to give up because this is the only way you can achieve a good level of expertise, which will lead you to enjoyable rounds with whoever you play.
