Well it sure has been a slippery ride to the number one place and a bit more slippery on the way down for Luke Donald. Taking the slide to second in the world golf rankings for the first time this year Luke is holding his own for now.
Not having the best year out of the start Luke has yet to put together a number one spot this year. Getting the closest at the WGC-Cadillac Championship tied at sixth place with John Senden with a 276 total at the end of round four.
So will we see Luke pull out in front again, I think we will need to see some consistent playing from Luke and I don’t think we are seeing Donald at his best. Time will tell and we will just have to wait to see if Luke Donald can take first place with so many wanting the same thing.
Lee Westwood has not exactly been in the winning circle as of yet this year but he did finish second in the Dubai Desert Classic on the European Tour. Tied with Stephen Gallacher with 271 they were one away from the victor Rafael Cabrera-Bello having a 270 total.
Then sitting in fourth spot in the world rankings is Martin Kaymer who has done no better than ninth place in 2012 WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship and ninth at the Commercialbank Qatar Masters.
What is in store for Rory McIlroy as he moves through this top spot of honour, but also a place so many are fighting to get a piece of. Then of course, there is always a reason the person at the top is the person at the top, they are good.
Rory for the five events he has been in this year stands at one win, two seconds, a tie for fifth and third place at the WGC-Cadillac Classic Championship. McIlroy stands on top of the heap at the first quarter of the year.
The biggest question of course is going to be for how long, if he keeps on playing at the standard he has been, he is going to be very hard to beat. However, you never know any one could turn on this year and move up the rankings fast enough to put a scare in McIlroy or anyone else seeking the top spot.
How fast did Justin Rose rise in the ranks as winning the Cadillac Classic he sits now at seventh spot, not sure from what place he came from, 23 rd I think, don’t quote me on that number. Goes to show you how fast someone can move up with a win.
Not long now, until the Masters at the August National Golf Club, in Augusta Ga. April 5-/2012 will Charl Schwartzel reign in victorious two years is a row. A win at the Masters surely would put Charl right up there as he sits at sixth place now.
It could be anyone’s spot to take, see all it takes is one or two good showings and you can move up the rankings or fall. Even Tiger Woods could make a leaping motion forwards towards the number one spot again and take down McIlroy.
For now Rory stands tall and proud as he should be, let all others try to knock the feather off his shoulder…
