When I used to approach the first tee during a round of golf, the first thing that entered my mind was how hard I wanted to hit that ball. I loved watching big drives and seeing the pro's just crush the ball, and I wanted to do it too. However, I soon realized early in my golf career that being able to hit monster drives was cool, but it's not going help you play a good round of golf.
If you love getting up there and just trying to knock the ball as far as you can, this might be a little tough for you. But if you really want to improve your golf swing, and more importantly your golf game, it's important that you learn to swing easy and not try to just crush the ball.
One of the most common mistakes golfers make is trying to swing to hard. Most golfers think that power is the name of the game, especially when coming off the tee box. They fail to realize that it's not having a powerful long drive that wins the game. What really matters is your control and your accuracy. That is what's going to win the game for you.
The key here is to be relaxed and swing easy. Easier said than done (trust me, I know from experience). One thing you might try is to bring your feet closer as this can help strain your ability to swing too powerfully. I'm sure this is nothing new, and I'm sure you've heard it before, but it's still something a lot of golfers struggle with.
Try not to brace yourself when you get over the ball. If you are too tense and stiff you can really throw off your balance. When this happens, your legs will be too tense to and any effort you make can cause your head to move, which will throw off your center of gravity as well.
I have learned that the more relaxed I am and the more I swing easy, the better my shot is. Not only with accuracy but sometimes with distance too. Sometimes I will actually hit the ball farther when I'm focused and relaxed vs. when I'm trying to crush it. You want to be in complete control of your swing at all times. You should not have to think or try hard to keep your balance and keep your head straight.
At first, this might feel awkward but the more you work on it, the more comfortable you'll get. Once you feel comfortable with your stance and relaxed swing, you can start to add some speed to your swing. A relaxed, easy swing should be one fluid motion. Don't bring the club back nice and slow and then come down with too much power or force.
These golf swing tips may not be new to you, but they are often forgotten by most golfers and it's the golf swing basics that can actually have the most impact on improving your game. Just remember, when it comes to your swing, it's not about how much energy and power you can apply to the ball, but it's about how much of that power you can control.
