I was lucky enough to try all the entire 714 range this weekend. I currently game the ping g20 irons models. The 714 CBs were just amazing. I was surprised at how much better thees felt. Distance without control is meaningless." That's what Chris McGinley, Titleist's vice president of golf club marketing, recently told the Golf Digest equipment team. With the launch of their new irons, Titleist is striving to provide distance irons that have shot-stopping ability, and maximum forgiveness with workability.
This set provides a classic, solid feel along with maximum shot control from the compact head shape and shallow cavity with inner muscle. A traditional, constant blade length with minimal progressive offset offers just the right balance of workability and distance control. The high-performance sole includes an increased camber and a smooth width progression thru the set, while the compact short irons feature a slightly reduced blade height in the heel. A straighter leading edge and blended hosel, for less visual offset, improves address appeal for more confident ball-striking.
The Titliest CB 714 Irons are successors to the 712 CB irons and due to their popularity then Titleist have just made a few tweaks to the 714 version. They feature an optimized shallow cavity-back design with an inner cavity muscle behind the impact area for solid blade iron feel. The slightly wider CB sole now features increased front-to-back camber for better turf release and playability from a variety of attack angles.
The looks are very clean and understated so they do not appear vastly different from the 712 model, but certainly the performance is better thanks to the sole changes. The longer irons do look compact for their size compared to the titleist ap2 714 irons, but I could see a lot of better players blending the 7-iron to P wedge from the CB range into the AP2 set.
The big difference is in the sole that has been improved with a smoother sole width progression and an increase in the camber of the sole in the short irons. This is to help the ball go through the turf better and this works very well indeed. The short irons in particular now feel superb and are one of the best performing irons we have tested for turf interaction this year.
Overall, the Titleist CB 714 ironsare a very good cavity back forged iron for better players who like the precision of blades. They are very well built. I was pleasantly surprised to see that they were able to incorporate a great forgivness while still creating great feel and workability. If you are a better player that wants a lower flight with more consistency distance wise these are for you.
