The Mysterious Pink Lake

Lake Hillier is a pink coloured lake on the middle island,which are the largest of islets and islands that makeup the Recherché Archipelago, Western Australia. The colour of the lake seems to be the solid bubblegum pink colour. The startling colour of the lake however remains a mystery. While, the scientists have proven that the colour is not due to algae, but still they couldn't explain that why the lake is pink in colour. The stunning phenomenon is natural and is worth a visit. It is such an essential distinguishing feature of the archipelago that the passengers on the plane move their necks just to take a glimpse of it. The pink lake is about 600 meters long and is surrounded by dense woodland of paper bark, eucalyptus and a rim of sand. A group of about 105 islands and over 1,200 ‘obstacles to shipping' surrounds the lake.

A very narrow strip of sand dunes is covered by vegetation which separates the strip into the north from the southern Ocean. Unlike the other various pink lakes across the world like the Salt Ponds at San Francisco Bay and the one in Retba, Lake Hillier has not been proved decisively of the pink colour of it, although it is speculated that the colour could arise from the dye which is created by the organisms of Dunaliella Salina and Halo bacteria. Another theory is that the pink colour is due to red Halophilic bacteria in the salt crusts. The colour is not pink, can only be proved by taking a small amount of water in a container and then note the colour is permanent or not. However, the rose pink colour is unmistakeable. Once the lake water reaches such a saltness level,which is greater than that of sea water, the temperature of the lake is high enough and adequate light conditions are provided to it as the algae begins to accumulate the red pigment beta carotene. They look as though someone has tipped a huge load of pink dye when no one was bothered. The first evidence ofpinklake dates back to the journals of Matthew Flinders, who was a British hydrographerand navigator in 1802. Flinders had climbed the highest peak which is now known as Flinders Peak,to survey the surrounding water when Flinders' came across this remarkable pink lake. Except for a few years from then, when the salt extraction was being carried out here, the island and its pink lake has remained almost untouched and has since then given the visitors with one of the most amazing view of the world's natural wonder.
