Why were scrap metals kitchen fats and other materials collected?

Scrap metals, kitchen fats, and other materials were collected during World War II as part of the government's effort to recycle and conserve resources for the war effort. The recycling program was known as the "Salvage for Victory" campaign and was coordinated by the War Production Board (WPB).

The WPB set quotas for different materials that were needed, such as scrap metal, rubber, paper, and fats. Citizens were encouraged to collect these materials and bring them to designated collection centers. The materials were then processed and used to make new products, such as weapons, ammunition, and other military supplies.

The "Salvage for Victory" campaign was a huge success and helped to recycle millions of tons of materials that would have otherwise gone to waste. The campaign also helped to raise awareness about the importance of recycling and conservation, and these efforts continued long after the war ended.
