Korum’s 8 great tips for floodwater barbel

WHAT a busy period we’ve enjoyed this autumn! After a flat-out schedule of trade and press events, we can finally take a deep breath and take stock of another great year for the brand! 

Currently we are being inundated with orders and enquiries about our new tackle – which you can see here. The new Xpert rods especially have been extremely popular, along with the new Barbel rods.

Given the current weather, we can understand why the 1.75lb and 2lb+ rods are going so well. The rivers are up 10ft or more but those barbel are really biting.

Korum’s Xpert Power hook – the choice for big barbel

1. USE STRONG HOOKS

It goes without saying that you need a strong, reliable hook for barbel and our choice is the Xpert Power hook. It’s based on the old Korum S3 pattern, but they’re only £1.20 a packet! We love them in the size 10 for most of our barbelling – the ideal size with a 12mm pellet.

2. GO ELLIPTICAL

The Sonubaits Elliptical Barbel & Carp Feed Pellets are flatter, so won’t roll down a fast river like a normal pellet. Ideal in speedy water conditions. Use them in feeder mixes or in PVA bags.

3. TRY PASTE

A Korum Paste Cage loaded with an oily, boilie-style paste is a great option in flooded water. The smellier the better! Check out the video above.

4. RODS HIGH

You’ll want to keep your line out of the water when fishing a fast river, so get that tip up high and use a big feeder. If you’re still struggling to hold bottom, let out a big bow of line to prevent the feeder from getting moved.

5. STRONG RIGS

A good hooklink material will serve you well in flooded conditions or a rising river, where snags may be where you least expect them. The new Korum Xpert Power hooklinks of Braid and Mono are both mega strong. They’re very dependable.

6. CLOSE THE CAPS

The Korum Combi-Feeder is a great option in flooded water as it can slow down the release of your bait through rapidly running water. Check out Nigel Botherway’s tip in the video above.

7. TRUST FISHMEAL

Fishy pellets are always good for barbel but especially so when the river’s high. The oily, fishy leakoff cannot be beaten.

8. LONGER RIGS

A long tail is the best bet in flooded conditions. Most big rivers will respond better to a rig of at least 6ft long in this sort of water level. See the video above with Nigel Botherway.
