1. Approach a fish that you have just caught.
2. Wait if necessary until the fish has stopped struggling.
3. Get the grip of the fish gripper ready by depressing the spring-loaded part of its grip with one hand.
4. Position the open jaws of the fish gripper below the fish's dorsal fin.
5. Let the jaws of the gripper close on the fish's lower jaw, so the fish is gripped just in front of the gill plate.
6. Lift the fish up just out of the water.
7. If the fish is small or moderately-sized, just remove the hook with a pair of pliers.
8. For large fish, insert a hook dislodger or other gripping tool into the corner of its mouth and slide it down to the hook, which you can then pull out.
9. Gently unhook the fish and then return it to the water.
