How do you catch nightcrawlers?

1. Preparation:

- Choose a suitable location with damp, moist soil.

- Look for areas like gardens, lawns, or other grassy areas.

- Bring a flashlight, a small shovel or trowel, and a bucket with a lid.

2. Hunt at Night:

- Nightcrawlers are most active after dusk and before dawn.

- Use your flashlight to help spot their movements on the ground.

3. Locate Nightcrawlers:

- Look for small mounds of soil or worm castings on the surface.

- These castings indicate the presence of nightcrawlers underground.

4. Digging:

- Gently use the shovel or trowel to dig into the soil.

- Dig a shallow hole, about 4 to 6 inches deep, around the casting.

- Scoop the soil out carefully, being mindful of the worm.

5. Find and Catch:

- Once you see the nightcrawler, gently grasp it behind its head with your fingers.

- Be cautious not to squeeze it too tightly.

6. Store:

- Place the nightcrawler in the bucket with a lid.

- Add moist soil, moss, or dampened paper towels to keep them hydrated.

- Ensure there's enough space for the nightcrawlers to move around comfortably.

7. Repeat the Process:

- Continue digging and searching for nightcrawlers in different spots.

- Be patient, as it might take some time to catch a few.

8. Release:

- If you're not using the nightcrawlers immediately, release them back into the soil where you found them.
