A sundial is an ancient instrument that uses the position of the sun to tell the time. It consists of a flat surface, usually a circular disc, with a gnomon (a vertical rod or stick) attached to it. As the sun moves across the sky, the shadow cast by the gnomon falls on different points on the dial, indicating the time.
