After getting a strike and you?re reeling in your fish a lot of times you will notice there will be another fish following it (due to the way your hooked fish is acting or looking for a free meal) and usually this excited fish is a lot bigger.
Now if you?re wading or shore fishing with a partner, trying to catch the second fish is almost always worth the effort, but you have to be ready. As soon as you see the follow-up fish getting your buddy to cast away of the hooked fish is a good idea, but sometimes you will have to drop it straight into the action to get a bite. This can lead to tangles, but can also mean landing some huge fish.
Be ready for a follow-up fish
In a boat it is good to have a follow-up rod prepared with something like a white jig or a bright spinner set. When a follower is spotted, your partner reels in what he?s throwing, then pitches out the follow-up lure.

Another option is to cast out about 10 feet from the boat a large bobber with a crawler rigged to a small hook on a 3-4 foot lead. An excited fish that sees the dangling worm will usually hit it hard.
