What does a hapuka fish eat?
Hapuka (Polyprion oxygeneios) have a varied diet which consists of squid, octopus, various species of fish that inhabit coastal rocky reefs including blue cod, red cod, tarakihi, butterfish, leatherjacket, jack mackerels, sweep, warehou, as well as other hapuka and even the juveniles of their own species. There isn't much that a hapuka won't consume in fact they aren't fussy eaters at all. Hapuka have even been caught on lures designed for catching kingfish or striped marlin that were trolled over reefs inhabited by these giant beasts of the sea, and they tend to take lures quite close to their rocky lairs rather than coming up into open water for their food
