Southeast Florida - Week 1 Report - April 2012 RIP Jose Wejebe - Spanish Fly
Today the fishing community lost a friend and fellow angler. Jose Wejebe, host of Spanish Fly fishing died when his kit plane crashed in a field near shortly after takeoff from Everglades Airpark. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family.
Offshore weather and sea conditions have been improving. Submarine sightings and surfacing were frequent between Port Everglades and Haulover inlet. The sailfish bite was good with the best bait being live goggle eyes drifted under a kite or balloon when the wind died down. The dorado bite slowed down with some scattered bites coming between 150 ? 600 feet. Kingfish and wahoo were taking trolled baits between 150 -300 feet. On the reefs and wrecks, yellowtail, mutton and mangrove snapper, amberjacks, scattered cobia and kingfish were between 70 - 120 feet. Triple tail were holding under floating debris. Further south, in the keys two righteous swordfish were caught during the week. A 680 pounder south of Marathon took a five-pound bonito and a 520 pounder was caught out of Islamorada.
Near shore, inshore, along the beaches, piers, inlets and Intracoastal, pompano, jacks, spanish mackerel and bluefish, and snapper were taking live shrimp, dead shrimp, pilchards, and floating lures. Around the docks and bridges snook were biting well on the darkside and mornings. Live and artificial shrimp on a popping cork called in the strikes. Tarpon are active in the inlets.
In the freshwater lakes bass were hitting top water baits in the morning with live shiners being the best bait for the evening. In the canal canals peacock bass were biting well.
If you?re heading out in the area south of Port Everglades and out about 3-4 miles, watch for surfacing submarines. The area was active with US Navy subs conducting underwater and surface maneuvers throughout the week.
