Coming off an epic day on Osoyoos Lake, the fishing report looks amazing for anyone looking to book a charter in the near future. I fished Osoyoos Lake on my day off today and boated 14 largemouth and 8 smallmouth, most over 2.5 pounds and a couple 4+. They're getting into the summer pattern and feeding aggressively to recover from the spawn. A typical guiding day on Osoyoos right now would look like 10-12 fish for a full 8 hour day, with the bulk of those fish in the 2.5 to 4 pound range. There is also great fishing for sunfish, crappie, bullhead catfish, and smaller bass for those with children.
Skaha Lake has also been fishing really well lately. On a guiding trip this past Monday, we boated nearly 40 bass in the 1 to 2.5 pound range on a wide variety of lures. Topwaters, swimbaits, crankbaits, tubes and dropshot all accounted for fish. You'll never know what to expect in the Okanagan, as this trip turned into a life-saving mission at one point as we were called into action to rescue a girl who was pushed out into the middle of the lake by a strong current created where the Okanagan River runs in. Look for more bigger fish to show as the effects of the spawning period continue to wear off.
4 lb 13 oz Christina Lake largemouth
Christina Lake is always good in the summer. While I haven't made it out there to guide yet this year, I am open to the possibility and eagerly awaiting my first Christina booking of 2012. A typical summer day on Christina Lake can yield 30 to 50 smallmouth bass in the quarter-pound to 3 pound range, with the bulk of those fish on the smaller end of that scale. Catching upwards of 10 largemouth is common in a half-day, with fish averaging about 1.5 pounds and commonly reaching up to 5 pounds.
Here's a breakdown of the biggest fish my boat's seen from each lake so far this year:
