Some call it a sport and some say it is a recreation there are those that call it a hobby, past time, a passion, a way of life. I suppose it depends on your outlook.
A Sport, yes and no: almost every weekend there is a tournament, derby somewhere you put your money up and try to out fish the field but does that make it a sport? We have professional fisherman from fresh water to Salt water basic definition of a professional is if you make a living from it. So we definitely have pro fisherman in the field of fishing. But is a tournament a sporting event or a contest. Every year that I fished tournaments I worked out in the off season to stay in shape, I read once that 10 hours of tournament fishing or guiding is the same as running a Boston marathon (calories used). In my eyes yes it is a sport every bit as much as Golf, Tennis or even say a contact sport if you never made a 60 minute run to get back to weigh in with a 5 foot waves then you may disagree but those who have know it is a contact sport at times. It all depends on your level of participation. My family Doctor idea of fishing is a bobber and a shade tree then no it is not a sport but a recreation the same as if you have a flag football game, you and your buddies go play a few rounds of golf, or you and the wife go for a few hands of tennis. Then no it is not a sport. But if you ever get in a real tournament, it you against the field, the elements, and the fish. Yes it is a sport.
I have taken a year off from fishing to let my body heal and to work on my boat that is now 10 years old, new trolling motor, new tires on the trailer, new bearings, new trailer wench, new graphs, I took the money I would spent on fishing and put it back into the boat so it would last me another 10 years ( I only plan 10 years at a time at my age LOL) but I did sneak off to a private lake and bank fish some trying new lures and techniques bank fishing has given me a new outlook at fishing and modifying lures that I would of never before because I had a boat full of them but bank fishing it what you can carry with you.
I did and will as long as I am able take the kids fishing, Brylee (14 ) told me and Royce to make sure we take real good care of ourselves so we can take Henry fishing ( he is 2 months old) that told me we were doing the right thing with them kids.
As far as the upcoming 60 event do I feel any different towards fishing the plain truth no but I pick my days fishing to avoid contact sports LOL
