Timmins Fur Council Family Day Fish

This was the third year the Fur Council held their kids fish on Family Day. In total 150 kids got to participate in this free outdoor activity. For many of the kids this was their first time fishing or ice fishing. It was also the first time many of the kids caught their first fish.

The day started off a little cold however it warmed up during the day. There was free hot chocolate for the kids and coffee for the adults, hot dogs and maple sugar pops to help keep the chill off. There was also two fire pits to warm up by if you were cold.

In total there was 14 fish caught and many others loss as the young anglers started to learn about ice fishing.

Some of the successful young anglers for the day were:

Toby Postma - 6 years old with a 38 inch Northern Pike

Colin Duize - 11 years old with a 31.5 and 25.5 Northern Pike

Everest MacMillan 3 years old with a whooper 30.5 Northern Pike

The event has grown so much over the last three years that the Timmins Fur Council was put in an unfortunate position of having to turn some kids away as there was no more available pace or equipment for additional kids. Over the last four days their phones had been ringing off the hook with parents trying to register but there was no more room left. I don't know which were more disappointed, the kids or the Timmins Fur Council Members.

With the growing success of this event each year the Council is looking at ways to improve the event for next year. Over the years the Timmins Fur Council have been committed to trying to make people aware of the outdoors opportunities and fishing spots which are located within the city that they can enjoy with their Family. They believe that teaching these young children to enjoy the great outdoors and to respect this resource by learning catch and release that it will benefit us all in the future.

Jodie Russell, TFC President, said that council member Eric Vachon approached the Council with the idea of the Kids Free Fishing Derby in 2012. The council thought it was a great idea and are very fortunate to have great volunteers and local Sponsors that stepped up to make this successful event for the kids. As a result of the generous Sponsors for this event, every child who participated went home with a prize whether they caught a fish or not.

All in all I feel that the Timmins Fur Council and their Event Sponsors, The City of Timmins, Goldcorp, Kidd Operations Timmins Nissan, the Metis Nation of Ontario, the Timmins Native Friendship, Daystar, Roztech, Big Mike's Tackle and the Club Richelieu desire a Big Hand for putting on such a great and important event for the kids to learn about our resources.

All I know is I can't wait until next years Fourth Fur Council Family Day Fish.
