For all you Long Island fishermen that read my posts and want to get a friend, family member, or children into fishing, Bartlett Pond is a great place to do so! There are Sunfish, Largemouth Bass, and Catfish in Bartlett, along with Crawfish (just in case you want to match the hatch). The Sunfish swim right up to the shoreline where everyone fishes just waiting to get food, mainly because it is also a park/playground where people bring their little children. Not only is it a playground, but it is also a War Memorial. Now, there are benches for you to sit if you get tired of standing, a playground like I said before if the children get bored of catching sunfish or bass (if that's possible), and wide open grassy area for you to picnic on if you'd like.
Now the sunfish are always on the shoreline because of the people that bring food for the swans and ducks, so watch out for whats left behind from those animals..moving on..
Everybody loves the fight the fish gives. That's why we try to get the biggest one possible and not the smallest one. So if you are strictly going after sunfish, use an Ultra Light fishing rod, small hooks (size 6 Eagle Claw), worms, and floats. BUT, just in case, you have the occasional 2+lb strong fighting largemouth bass that wants to eat the bait you may want to use a Light Action rod. Stick to 10lb braid, pros will tell you to use certain lines, and mess with your head, listen, you're out to have fun, not to do math equations on the boat and calculate everything and change your line because there's a cloud in front of the sun, no, just take it from me, I fish between 10-25 lb PowerPro Braid, I HAVE HAD NO PROBLEMS. I CATCH MONSTER BASS (Long Island standards and where ever I fish) NO PROBLEM. If you go out to have fun and not worry about calculating everything, it'll all work out.
Anyway every fish will feel like a monster with either set up you use!
Best time for catching big fish like anywhere is in the Spring when it starts to warm up and in the Fall when it starts to cool down.
I went out today, my Dad had a nice solid 2 1/2 lb bass and I had this 1 1/2 lber on a Black Booyah Spinnerbait.
Bartlett leads into Spring Lake...to be continued..
