Finding the right spot isn't always easy. Looking for a school of bass takes time and patience, however by luck and traveling by boat approximately 20 minutes down stream from Kenora, through the channels, bays and large open waters of Lake of the Woods, and a few discussions whether left or right, we agree and find a quiet tucked-away cove. The lake has many different coves, however this one turned out to be filled with smallmouth bass and northern pike!!!
The smallmouth Bass were in the mist of spawning, feverishly moving from within inches to the shore and many swimming right below the boat with a depth of five feet. We could see clear through to the bottom of the clean lake in this area. It is amazing and impressive to watch as this fish frolic throughout the waters and due to their hunger, follow the lures till one bites - and many did bite!
This area is surrounded by pristine shorelines with some areas that are rocky, sandy and some trees hanging over the water giving shade. We find with using crank and swim baits and trying out a Lindy Rattler bait seem to create a curiosity amongst them as they follow the lures through the water, the bites and catches seem to happen more when we first throw close to shore.
Our catch of the day consisted of three Northern Pikes, 24", 18", and 34" really fun to catch, and five Bass, 3lbs, 2.45lbs, 3.5lbs, 2.7lbs, and 3.5lbs.
A great fishing day for us once we found the right spot, a treasured fish haven filled cove.
