Anglers who frequent the Morgan Falls Dam portion of the Chattahoochee River should be excited to learn about the construction of a new fishing pier, according to the Georgia Department of Natural Resources' Wildlife Resources Division.
The pier, being built by Georgia Power as a recreational improvement for Morgan Falls Dam, will provide great additional angler access below the dam. Completion is anticipated by mid-February 2011.
As a side effect of construction, public access to the parking lot, shoreline and DNR boat ramp on the Fulton County side of the river (just below the dam) will be unavailable for most of November 2010 and January 2011. There is a public boat ramp a short distance downstream at Johnson Ferry Road that can accommodate boat access to that portion of the river.
While the project poses a temporary inconvenience, "it should be a net positive moving forward," said WRD Fisheries Management Region Supervisor Chris Martin.
The construction will be in two phases. The first phase is scheduled to begin Oct. 25, 2010, resulting in the area being unavailable the remainder of October and most of November. The area is scheduled to re-open Nov. 23, 2010, and remain open through Jan. 3, 2011. Beginning Jan. 4, 2011, the area will be closed for four additional weeks, with plans to open back up in early February.
Visitors should check area signs for any change in this schedule.
