Beyond Becoming an Outdoors-Woman

Watch for four special Beyond "Becoming an Outdoors-Woman" (BOW) programs this year that will give women a chance to explore outdoor topics such as firearms, deep sea fishing, waterfowl hunting and fly-fishing.

"Beyond BOW" courses expand the offerings of traditional Becoming an Outdoors-Woman fall and winter workshops. These in-depth courses are designed to give women the skills to do the outdoor activity on their own. It also gives participants a chance to network with other like-minded women with whom to share these activities.

Brochures and registration materials will be available at www.nhbow.com on the registration opening date listed for each course. Participation is first-come, first-served, so be sure to sign up quickly if you're interested. "Beyond BOW" courses for 2011 include:

Introduction to Firearms -- May 14, 2011, at the Owl Brook Hunter Education Center in Holderness, N.H. In this one-day course, participants will become familiar with all firearm action types, using the correct ammunition, proper maintenance, safe handling and storage. Workshop includes a live shooting opportunity at the range. Cost of $55 includes equipment and lunch. Registration opens April 4. Limited to 20 participants.

Deep Sea Fishing Adventure -- June 12, 2011; leaves from the State Pier at Hampton Beach, N.H. This all-day fishing trip aboard the Yellowbird will introduce you to the basics of deep-sea fishing. You'll learn about equipment, bait, fish identification, safety and caring for your catch. Use of rods and bait included. Water and snacks provided; bring your own lunch. Cost: $70. Registration opens May 2. Limited to 25 participants.

Waterfowl Hunting Weekend -- August 12 - 14, 2011, at Barry Conservation Camp in Berlin, N.H. Participants will learn the skills needed to hunt waterfowl, including identification, gear, guns and hunting techniques. Learn firearm safety and try clay pigeon shooting. N.H. Fish and Game biologists will discuss waterfowl management and demonstrate how they catch birds to band. Stay in newly renovated, rustic cabins. Fee includes all meals. Cost: $175. Registration opens June 27. Limited to 15 participants.

Fly-Fishing Weekend -- Sept. 23 - 25, 2011, at the Sportsman's Lodge in Stewartstown, N.H. Intermediate workshop for anglers with some fly-fishing experience who want to gain the skills needed to fly-fish on their own. Expert instructors will teach the finer points of casting; reading the water; picking a fly; and what to do when you catch a fish. Cost of $275 includes food and lodging. Bring own fly-rod. Registration opens July 25. Limited to 15 participants.
