Spring has finally come, and the ice is melting away. Now it’s time to do some Trout fishing.
Trout are top or bottom feeders. That is they normally feed at the surface, or just below it, or near the bottom. Fish the percentage areas and don’t waste time fishing the middle.
So right after “ice out” in the spring, try trolling very slowly with large streamers fished on a floating style fly line with a small weight on the leader, just enough to take it just below the surface. Trout are slow in the spring due to the long, cold winter so follow the shoreline and fish slowly. Concentrate on the middle hours of the day, this is when the water is warmest and Trout are most active.
The same goes when fishing with spoons, go slow. To make a semi weedless spoon or one you can use for bottom fishing, cut the lower hook off the treble. The spoon will still act or wobble the same. The other two hooks ride with points up and your strike ratio should remain the same.
When fishing streams in the spring try using small spinning lures and fish slowly across the stream. Use only a single hook to prevent constantly hooking bottom.
Here's to the new Trout season... FISH-ON! Cookster
