I know this has happened to a lot of us. You’re on a stream and having a good day fly fishing, when all of a sudden you go to change flies and your confidence box is gone.
What do I mean by "confidence box"? It is the fly box you carry that holds the flies you plan to fish with during the day. You still have all your other boxes, but this one carries the patterns that you have had the best luck with on this particular water at this particular time. I will move flies in and out of this confidence box and rarely have to dig in my vest to look for that certain fly while fish are raising around me.
So here I was having a great day fishing, when I noticed I lost my confidence box. It must have fallen out of my vest pocket while crossing back and forth. Should be easy to find, right? No. The box was two-tone green and blended right in with the vegetation. I never did find it, which basically ended my day.
Learn from your mistakes, right? Here are some ideas to help you hang onto that fly box.
One idea is to have the box hanging from a lanyard around your neck. This makes it much harder to lose.
Another idea is to consider the color of the box. There are many different colored boxes out there you can get. When searching for a lost box, a brightly-colored one is much easier to spot.
If you own a dark fly box, put a bright section of duct tape on the bottom of it with your name and contact information. When you lose your fly box, you’ll want to have complete contact information on it. Most fly fishers are honest folks and will return lost items to the original owner.
The key to success is to keep this confidence box with you at all times. After all, it contains the flies you plan to fish with that day, so you don’t want to lose it.
