Bass Fishing After the Winter Solstice

The end of the world did not happen as predicted by the Mayan Calendar, However, December 21 is the shortest day of the year and the days will now getting longer with almost a minute each day of more light. The water temperatures in the Southeast are dropping in a normal cycle and we should see the fishing pick up gradually from now until spring as the bass will react to the longer days. The winter solstice, or the first day of winter, is the unofficial beginning of the pre-spawn in bass. Successful anglers must know the importance of the water temperature when perusing bass.

The winter solstice brings change to the habits and the nature of bass. Anglers will now find patterns that will produce after most area lakes have turned, mixing the oxygen. However, prolong cold fronts and extreme temperature changes can delay the natural affect the longer days have on the bass. Here in Middle Tennessee the weather will change frequently from periods of mild weather to harsh bitter cold through the end of February, but the longer days will be noticed soon. I always say, ?When you?re in Tennessee, if you don?t like the weather just wait three days. ?

It is a fact that rocky Rip Rap banks hold active bass on sunny days as the rocks warm the water in the midday sun. Deeper grass points will also attract bass. Grassy shallow creek edges can also produce bites; Grass edges are sometimes warmer underneath and bass will suspend on the edges of the creeks. Submerged wood cover as well as wooden docks in deep water can hold some heat making them good places to try. These areas can be a big bass abode and a secret honey hole for some early year tournament anglers. Keep in mind that one degree can make all the difference in a bass? world.
The best part of the day will be from 10 am to 2 pm. With the days now getting longer the sun will warm the surface water and the bass move and feed taking advantage of the warmer temperatures. They will feed up and actually feed shallower in the cold water. The cold water techniques that I have shared with you such as the Float and Fly, blades, tail spinners, soft plastics, jerkbaits and jigging spoons will play an important part of being successful in the frigid water.

As we move closer to spring, bass will gain momentum from their lethargic state as they feed up for the up-coming spawn. As the day gets longer and the water gets warmer nature takes over and the bass metabolism tells the fish it is time to prepare their bodies for the spawn, which is a good thing for anglers.  The world didnt end and neither did the fishing season.

Happy Fishing!
