Sitting in the bleachers recently with my youngest son, Will, a couple of local high school football teams played four spirited quarters in front of an overflow crowd, all basking under those Friday Night Lights that Texas is famous for.
Before the night's contest was over, the winning Pottsboro Cardinals had put on a display of what it takes to win the three phases that exist in every football game: offense, defense and special teams.
From stellar quarterback and receiver play, a stingy defense that stuffed the run and avoided giving up any big pass plays and a special teams unit that constantly gave the home team the edge in field position, the result was a big victory for the Cardinals.
Sitting at my office desk reflecting on all of the above, it dawned on me that just as it is true in gridiron struggles each week, there also are three distinct keys to fall bass fishing endeavors.
Get these three keys right and more times than not, an angler will go home on a Friday evening or Saturday afternoon with a smile on their face after enjoying a winning day out on the water.
What are those three keys? The first one is to pay attention to the all important water temperature as shortening days and the first cool fronts begin to chisel down steamy readings on area lakes.
