Bass Fishing In Ontario

Few places in the world rival bass fishing in Ontario. Ontario boasts of the mighty Kenora River, the Quetico Park, Rainy Lake, the Kawarthas and the southern Great Lakes which offer fantastic bass fishing. Smallmouth bass are often caught in these waters, with the biggest ones topping at 6 pounds.

Still, while Ontario is famous for its smallmouth bass fishing, largemouth bass fish is also popular. They can be caught in the southern waters of Ontario and sometimes in some areas of the northwest. The record holder for the largest largemouth bass is a staggering 11-pounder caught in Preston Lake.

Anglers in Ontario use different techniques when catching bass fish. Some prefer high-speed boats and a variety of rods. A vast number of large bass are caught off the docks using red and white bobbers and worms attached on single hooks as bait. Bass aren't really picky eaters. They don't care what you're wearing or driving, just as long as you give them something they'd want to eat.

When bass fishing in Ontario, it is advisable to lug around a wide array of lures such as worms, plastic grubs, tubes and shads. An effective strategy for catching smallmouth bass in Ontario's waters is to cast out a tube jig and drag it from a drifting boat. Bass fish are also attracted to smoke-colored grubs attached on black jig heads. Some areas of the water that are likely to hold bass include areas where there are large boulders or weedy covers and rocks stacked up near cottages.

Aside from the lures already mentioned, spinnerbaits are also effective for catching both smallmouth and largemouth bass. Crankbaits also lure this aggressive fish. On a calm day, water plugs and a couple of line spinners can give you thrilling bass fishing.

Fishermen are advised to bring their own personal spinning or baitcasting rods and reels. They should remember, though, that smallmouth bass can also be caught by using medium or medium-light spinning gear. Unlike the largemouth bass, which are usually found in waters where there is heavy cover or vegetation, smallmouth bass prefer the open water.

Smallmouth bass are some of the feistiest fish around. They won't be caught without a fight. This fact alone makes fishing for bass one of the most exciting fishing activities around. With over 70,000 lakes and a hundred fishing charters and lodges to choose from, your vacation and bass fishing experience in Ontario surely can't be beat.
