If you want to use a kayak more effectively in fishing calmer waters then you should really consider learning how to attach kayak fishing rod holders. A large number of fishermen prefer the flush-mount units –holders that do not extend above the deck of the vessel. However, in this article we will only discuss ways to mount the common external rod holder. The installation of these units is a relatively easy job and you will only need a few basic tools to do it right.
Here are the main items you will need:
-
Electric drill
-
3/16” drill bit
-
Masking tape
-
Adjustable wrench
-
Permanent marker
-
Waterproof sealant
-
3/16" wide, 3/4”-long machine screws, flat washers and nuts
-
Sit in your kayak, either while you are at home or in the garage, and simulate the movement of your arms to find the most convenient location for your mounts. Before drilling you should visualize the direction your lines will be heading so you can manage your paddle and rod movements effectively. The goal is to eliminate aggravation, of course. Once you know where to best place a fishing rod holder, you should feel more confident before you start to drill holes through your kayak.
-
Place small pieces of masking tape over the points where you will drill holes. Mark these holes on the pieces of tape with your permanent marker. The tape will enable you to drill a cleaner hole through the deck of your kayak. Most bases for external rod holders will feature either three or four holes.
-
Drill straight through the deck of your kayak. Place the base over the drilled holes. Reach under the deck and attach the flat washers and tighten the nuts for each hole. If there is no access beneath the deck at the location you want your fishing rod holder, you will need to purchase some well nuts and screws. Also you will need to match the appropriate size screwdriver before you can install those types of screws.
-
Hand tighten the nuts and check whether your base is sitting flat and flush against the deck. Tighten the nuts with the wrench until snug.
-
Attach the main part of the mount per individual product instructions. Mounts come in many varieties so you need to consult with the instructions before assembling it to the base.
-
Use the marine sealant to make a water-proof seal around the head of each bolt. This should keep the entire exterior of your craft water tight.
Once the sealant has properly dried you are ready to test your craft in actual fishing situations. Remember, the paddle is your most important asset while on the water so you need to test your rod placements to see if you can operate all equipment without hassle. Installing a fishing rod holder can be a great aid, allowing your kayak to become an effective platform for catching both size and numbers of fish.
