Fishing With Jigs
One of the most effective baits used today are that of jigs. These fishing baits work especially well in water that is clear to slightly murky and in temperatures less than sixty degrees when the bass will usually be found in cover. Jigs are considered presentation lures and the secret to fishing with them is making them look as lifelike as possible with a slower presentation.
Jigs are lead headed, heavy baits that have one hook. Attached to that hook is a trailer or skirt that serves to attract the fish. With a proper weed guard, these lures can be used effectively even in dense vegetation and cover where bass tend to want to linger. Jigs easily make their way into the vicinity where bass are without looking suspicious or alarming the fish like a baitfish or crawfish might. Once the bass is hooked, it will have more difficulty coming loose from a single hook jig than it might a treble hook one.
Vast arrays of weights for jigs are also available. It is important to learn how to fish each and every size that you might consider using. In clearer water you will want to use lighter weights, line and spinning fishing tackle. In deep or murkier water and dense vegetation, you will want to use the heavy jigs of around 3/8 or 5/8 of an ounce along with heavier fishing line as well.
Always fish with the lightest weigh that you can possibly get away with using as long as you can feel any cover or the bottom of the water. You should always have with you an assortment of differing weights of jigs for different temperatures of water, cover and clarity.
Always use your jig as you would a drop bait, casting to the bank while engaging the spool. Once you feel it hit the floor you will then want to drop the tip of your rod and reel in the slack. Once you have done this, slightly draw it back in order to move your lure so that it can begin to drop again. If you feel your line twitch, that is most likely a fish striking your bait so you will want to immediately set the hook. Jigs can also be cast among logs, stumps, grass and other cover like casting lures or by swimming. Always be sure to have a variety on hand whenever fishing for bass as these are one of the best lures to have with you at all times.
