Post Spawn Fish can be Gobs of Fun!
As we work our way through the spawn we start to see post spawn fish show up all over the lake; to me this can be the best time of year for many reasons. I believe that the post spawn fish are easier to catch than any time of year. The bass are aggressive the healing females are hungry and the shad spawn is about to show up on the ledges.
Combine these characteristics and you have some of the best fishing of the year! The key is to understand what the migration from spawn to post spawn fishing is all about and learning the key areas where the bass start to show up. When bass go thru the spawning process there are elements that cause such an aggressive nature; first is the pure fact that the males protect the fry for some period of time and if you fish the beds the smaller buck bass are extremely protective. Secondly the females are not far away from the bed they may be suspending along the nearest point, but they will be close together and easy to find.
I also believe that the females are very sensitive to bright colors during this post spawn period, I don抰 know why but bright colors like blue and chartreuse or, bright green and chartreuse or gold and reds always produce during the post spawn! The next thing is that the post spawn fish become really aggressive and lures like spinner baits, top water baits, wake baits and medium running crank baits are extremely productive.
Some of my favorites during this period is Secret Weapons bright red and gold bladed buzz baits, Punisher Lures water melon colored spinner baits with gold and red willow leaf blades or SPRO Little Baby John DD 60 crank bait in bright blue on chartreuse are extremely productive and always catch fish in the post spawn period.
Lastly post spawn fishing always produces great numbers when you抮e fishing the right areas and you can have a great day with just a little planning on your post spawn fishing trip!
