Turn Junes Heat into Some Cool Fishing!
Fishing in the June means two things for sure. Heat and humidity! I don抰 really like either, but one thing I do like! Is that the bass have spawned and are now ganging up to hunt in packs. What does this mean, it means that a angler can find a school of fish and catch many from one area. He will not need to fish one spot to catch one fish. Bass at this time of year will be in groups.
The reason they do this is because of the abundant schools of shad and to recover from spawning. Some of the first areas I will look will be on the points leading out from spawning flats, pockets, and creeks. Once the spawn is over the bass will move out to these deeper area抯 to safer water and to recuperate after the spawn.
As the days become longer water temperatures warm the fish will begin migrating out toward deeper water, Seeking cooler temperatures, shad, and oxygen. What an angler will want to do is look at his GPS or Lake Map to locate likely areas from the points that were nearest to the spawning areas and then determine their likely migration out to main lake ledges. Now once you have located some likely areas you will want to look at these areas closely. Looking for small subtle changes in these places, you may be able to see them on your map if not get out on the water and begin looking with your sonar to see subtle contour changes, balls of shad, anything that may be different than the entire surrounding area. Sometime when I find an area that looks promising to me, I will go over it many times looking on my sonar for anything I can find, and keep in mind these small targets may take some looking they can be really hard to find. But with today抯 equipment it抯 a lot easier. So many times I have been out on the water searching for new places here on Kentucky Lake I will go over with my sonar many times just looking and if I find something I will mark it with my GPS and I still use marker buoys. I keep several in my boat. After I find something I like I will come back to the area later so that it can settle down then I will fish it. Even after I start fishing I抦 using my crankbait to tell me what抯 going on exactly down there, a jig, Carolina rig, or a Texas rigged ZOOM worm all talks to me.
To find a really good area takes some real work, but once you do you can have an area to fish all summer. And like anything you do repeatedly you will get confidence and get a lot faster at finding where the fish are during the summer.
