Buzzing Up Bass

This is the time that the bass will start coming up shallow and close to the bank during certain times of the day and during certain weather conditions. What this really means is that early and late in the day and at night the bass will use the cover of darkness to move to shallow water areas and close to the bank to hunt for food. And also during foggy and overcast and dark rainy weather the bass will move toward shallow water. During many times of the year the bass can be found on any type of bank for no particular reason.

I have went bass fishing before and would have swore that the bass would be on rocky banks or on banks with lay down logs and trees on it. And throw a variety of top water bait and not get a strike. And then move to the same looking spot somewhere else and still not do any good. And then see a long mud bank with no cover and make a cast down it and get a strike. And end up catching several bass off this area. This is a typical pattern at this time of year. There will be a line in the water where the clear water meets the muddy water. The bait fish will follow this muddy to clear water line and the bass will also use this by holding in the stained water till a bait fish swims by and darting out and eating it.

The bass will use this color line as a ambush point or also called a edge. Just like a weed edge or a drop off edge. Bass love these types of areas because it gives them a hiding and ambush point.All of these shallow water areas can be fished with a buzz bait. The buzz bait is a type of top water bait that is loved by bass anglers and hated by bass. The angler loves it because of its ability to catch bass and lots of them and it's a big bass bait. And because of the heart stopping top water explosion of a hard strike. The bass hate the buzz bait because of the screeching noise of the blade plus the disturbance of the water the blade creates to just something swimming on top of the water that they can eat. All of this drives a bass to want to kill this thing and this is what causes the heart stopping strikes that the buzz bait is known for.

The buzz bait comes in several sizes and color combinations. It comes in a single bladed model and a twin bladed plus a in line style that is mostly used for river or musky fishing. The bait comes in several color combos. The general rule is to use the smaller more natural colors like white and chartreuse in the clearer water, during the day, in the river or when the bass are spooked for any reason. And you can switch to larger baits at night and in low light and overcast conditions. At night try the darker baits like black , blue or purple or a combinations of these colors. Make your cast past your target and work it as close to or into the cover to draw a strike. Or if your fishing over open water or down a bank, make your cast parallel to the bank. This will keep the buzz bait in the strike zone area of the bass longer. I believe that when you retrieve the buzz bait that it is best to reel the bait just fast enough to keep the bait up and the blades turning.

A buzz bait is a good search bait and can cover a lot of water quickly. It is the type of bait that can produce five bass in five cast when fished at the right time on the right spot. Give this type of top water fishing a try it can be very productive.
