What is your favourite carp bait and what mental picture do you have in your mind thinking about your favourite bait? The chances are that you are thinking about a typical round ball or barrel-shaped object. But is the ultimate truth of what a carp bait really is and can be at its most potent level? Consider how much bait has evolved over the past 50 years. Then just question what improvements and changes will be made in the entire world of bait over the next 50 year, considering that the internet is a gigantic pool of resources towards this intention! Bait is not necessarily what you think it is or can be!

Bear in mind that the current bait bosses in particular in the UK all began at their own kitchen tables making their own homemade baits. Even the guy that invented the famous Grange bait and was one of the founding partners of Mainline Baits began in his shed and kitchen making and testing homemade baits. So remember that in making your own homemade baits today, you are no different to the guys running the biggest name companies! But you need to understand something very important things about carp bait!

The fact is that most ready made baits made commercially today are still basically the same recipes and formulations that first became known by more forward thinking and more well connected anglers in the know, over 30 or 40 years ago. And still the massive majority of commercial boilie baits are heated by boiling in water. This means that the vast majority of bait that anglers using ready made boilies are using is based on extremely old fashioned and now out-dated thinking and concepts!

As for out-dated and old fashioned things are worse than that, because actually baits made this way are drastically self-defeating because so many of their features, characteristics, modes of actions and more are way too familiar to carp these days.

Carp became used to and wary of barrel shaped bait 10 years ago therefore these are no edge at all over round boilies! Also commercial bait makers insist on using egg as a binder and basis of their recipes, and tend to do this because this is the way it has always been done!

Yet one of the most impressive ways of limiting the effectiveness of a carp bait is to base it upon egg, and heat that so it become insoluble, and really hard to digest! You can really laugh at how old fashioned such an idea of bait really is the more these and many other features and characteristics and methods of production are still being slavishly adhered to by homemade bait makers and commercial bait makers world wide!

Another factor which must be made clear is that in times before fish meal baits became a cult, most anglers did not use fish meal baits, and in fact caught just as many fish using a massively smaller amount of free bait! You have got to question the reasons for this! These days so many anglers are becoming more and more wary of readymade baits because they are simply not catching the numbers and quality of fish that anglers are promised to be able to catch using them! It appears that massive numbers are catching using readymade baits merely because the majority of anglers use readymade baits, yet the same numbers would apply if anglers use luncheon meat, maggots or worms.

Of course these do not get the celebrity treatment like readymade boilies do in advertorials twisted to push branded boilies in all the flashy carp magazines with the words food bait etc all over them, as if worms, bread paste or maggots are not food bait and as if food bait is something new!

Of course so much of carp fishing today is about capturing and holding the ever shorter attention span of anglers looking for the next best thing in flashy psychologically stimulating packaging and flashy adverts and subliminal advertising dressed up as tutorial in-depth article pieces in magazines.

The fact is that magazines are paid for by advertisers of the likes of the Mainline, Korda etc, which is exactly why these appear everywhere! But this is not carp fishing. It is slick commercial psychology and carp do not watch their videos and read their magazines!

So what is bait if it is not those bright balls promoted as the ultimate in carp bait, in carp technology and science, and the only thing you should be using according to mainstream commercially biased mindsets? I compare readymade bait to sweets in a sweet shop as in they are made for this prime reason; to make the bait makers money. Therefore they will use whatever psychological means words, pictures, colours, and jargon to tempt humans into buying into their products and brands!

They even to encourage buyers to become so fixated on a brand, that people become anxious if they are not using that brand! That is the power of psychology folks, but that has nothing to do with the truth about what the very best and most ideal concept of what the most effective most forward-thinking carp baits truly are!

I have actually had anglers approach me on the bank and insist that such and such a brand of bait is the best bait in the word, even though they have not caught anything on it in 4 days and nights of fishing an easy water with carp spawning approaching! Also I have occasionally had anglers state how their fear their chances of catching carp are zero unless they use the so-called going bait that it seems that everyone is using. Both these examples are brilliant illustrations of the commercial carp bait psychology machine in action!

Make people through constant exposure to advertorials, videos and adverts and group mindset peer pressure-conditioned enough to be totally dependant upon your brand of bait! Then out of fear anglers will not take the perceived risk of trying new things new concepts, new brands, or even truly think original thoughts and think for themselves, and will slavishly stick to what they have been conditioned to use and how to think and what to do!

In Eastern Europe, where such tactics have been used to control minds so obviously in so many ways other than carp fishing, people are far more aware and sensitive to it, and I know very many eastern European anglers refuse to use readymade baits because they are made by the very same people publishing the magazines. Yet in a way this is the same in the UK as the magazines only survive through the constant advertorials and conditioning of anglers pushing branded baits and tackle and magazines primary income is companies paying for expensive advertising! This makes carp fishing a very biased and skewed industry indeed!

Yet amongst all the recycled and often misleading and misguided dross there are gems of wisdom and also independent thinkers with a genuine aim of helping their fellow anglers instead of merely building market share and their bank account!

It is so very obvious when speaking with anglers on the bank just how brainwashed they are by company advertising, advertorials, videos and the like. Some anglers look like they bought everything in the tackle shop brand new just yesterday, and insist that if are not using the same brand of bait as them then you must be crazy or just plain ignorant!

I might indeed stand out because I personally use homemade baits and my only aim in testing is to defeat every single leading brand or minor brand bait, because my aim is to help empower my fellow anglers to be capable of doing the same, and to never be dependant upon readymade baits ever again!

I want my fellow anglers to be so impressed by the success of their own creativity based upon a very sound input of knowledge and information I provide that they never ever look back, and never use readymade baits ever again! I have achieved this for countless people and this makes me very happy indeed! Yet bait companies are not out of pocket, because anglers need suppliers of exceptional additives, human grade ingredients and liquids of outstanding potency and it is up to companies to find such substances!

It is up to bait companies to provide these quality guaranteed fresh products if they want to attract more and more sophisticated customers. This is only right because this means more fish on the bank for customers and less time on the bank for more fish! The days of expecting big fish using cheap bait that simply wastes your time on the bank, must be eliminated!

The most powerful way to take back control is to make your very own baits by becoming educated!

You fail to have the biggest edge of bait if you are using exactly the same readymade bait as other anglers on your lake. The biggest edge in carp fishing is being different. This means that if you are first on a water using a bait that is great. But if not you can severely cut your chances. I am no longer a believer of the old fashioned high nutritional bait or balanced nutritional bait or food bait theory, yet I slavishly used it for 25 years.

But now I am using my own new theory and it beats food bait and instant attractor bait. I use a slightly different homemade bait each time I go fishing, so I am literally giving my fish a completely new experience each time. But it is in how I differentiate my baits each time that is crucial, that involves knowledge, a long history of bait testing and consulting and creative skills and this can all be passed on to others if they really want to find out more. This is how I hooked 10 out of the 10 forty pound carp in particular water, instead of merely hooking the same 4 forties that the regulars kept catching on their readymade baits and pellets.

Bait is where individual fish sensitivities meet functional internal and external factors plus water reactive factors and your own level of understanding of fish in context to their world, because the most effective bait is a reflection of your target fish! Bait is not a matter of whether a fish wants to eat a Mars bar or a Steak dinner. It is nothing to do with that misguided concept. You need to understand that carp are in constant evolution individually, genetically, and each fish changes every day according to its experiences and bait exposure and individual taste and other unique levels of sensitivities!
