Techniques for Striped Bass Fishing

The largemouth bass has long been the most popular target for many anglers. In recent years, though, striped bass fishing has become just as popular. One reason for this surge in popularity is the fact that the striped bass is so elusive, making it more challenging to catch. If this sounds like something you might like to try your hand at, the following tips and techniques for striped bass fishing should help get you started.

Equipment

A successful fishing trip will always start with the right equipment, and striped bass fishing is no different. Let's start with your rod. The best choice is medium to heavy action rod. The length of your rod will be anywhere from 5' to 12', depending on where you are fishing and how far you need to cast. Longer rods will give you more distance on your casts.

The reel that you choose will be mostly a matter of personal preference. Some will tell you that you need an enclosed reel, but if you prefer a regular spinning reel, that will work too. For striped bass fishing, it's recommended that you use at least 300 yards of 15 to 20 pound test line. The type of line you use will depend on the terrain in the area you will be fishing. Monofilament should work for most applications, but braided lines can be used for areas of heavy cover.

Techniques

Techniques used for striped bass fishing will depend on where you are fishing for them. If you are striper fishing in a lake, you want to fish the deepest waters possible. Trolling is one of the most effective ways to catch these fish. Live baits, such as shad, shiners, and eels will probably be you best bet. If you want to use lures, make sure you use one of the deep diving types.

Surf fishing is one of the most popular styles of striped bass fishing. For this, you'll need a long surf fishing rod, probably around 12' in length. Before you begin, chumming the water will help to bring the bigger fish in close. In this type of area, clams and mullet are good choices for bait. When casting, try to get your bait beyond the third or fourth wave.

No matter where you fish for striped bass, there is the possibility of landing huge fish. Some of these fish can get up to four feet long. For the avid bass angler, this type of fishing can offer them a new and exiting challenge.
