Discovering the Winter Bass Fishing Technique

Most bass fishermen equate bass fishing with hot, sunny days but this is not necessarily the case. You can actually have some very good luck in the winter if you understand the winter bass fishing technique. Instead of staying home during the cold weather, you might be interested to know that you can catch some high quality bass during those months when all of the other anglers are at home watching the football game.

Cold weather fishing is not always easy. Being on the water automatically makes it feel colder than it actually is. Probably the first thing to learn for the winter bass fishing technique is how to dress for the occasion. If you don’t have on the proper clothes to keep you warm you are not likely to stay long enough to achieve success. Fortunately, there are many new technologies on the market today to handle this issue.

Winter bass fishing technique requires that you slow down and give the fish time to bite. Bass will get almost dormant in the winter months and they will not feed as often as when the water is warmer. It takes them longer to move and this requires skill and patience on behalf of the angler. Many times you have to just allow your bait to sit in one place long enough for a bass to realize he might have an interest in it. Fish caught in the winter are usually the larger ones who need a higher intake of food to survive the winter months.

Winter Bass Fishing Technique Tips

Bass tend to like shallow areas of water and the winter seems to be no different. When referring to shallow, that usually means an area of water that is up to twelve feet deep. In many areas the winters are not as cold as they used to be and the bass stay active longer. This means they will probably be in an area where the water is shallow but they will remain near an area where they have access to deeper water.

Winter bass fishing techniques require a different presentation of the bait. Since the bass feed slowly in the winter, you will also need to present your bait to them slowly. You have to entice the bass to bite your bait and this may take some patience. It is not the same as the fast paced spinner baits which are used in warmer weather, but the bite is still just as much fun.

Winter tackle is different from warm weather tackle. There is no need to take all of the top water spinner baits with you in the winter because you will be wasting your time. Try the more natural looking baits that can be used in deep water, as well as shallow. The plastic worm is always good if you stick with a natural color that is realistic looking to the bass. Crawfish are also a good choice since this is one of the bass’s favorite meals.

Winter bass fishing technique is different from those techniques used in warm weather but the rewards can be just as great. You don’t usually have to share the lake with a lot of other boaters and the fish are usually larger and just as much fun to catch.
